What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the distinct group of symptoms that occurs when the sciatic nerve—the body’s largest and longest nerve—is compressed by shifting vertebrae, a bulging or herniated disc, or a bone spur. Treatment for sciatica pain often begins with conservative techniques to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also provide pain relief, as can hot/cold therapy with a heating pad and ice pack. In more severe cases that do not respond to conservative methods, anti-inflammatory injections or surgery to take pressure off of the nerve may be recommended.
