What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the distinct group of symptoms that occurs when the sciatic nerve—the body’s largest and longest nerve—is compressed by shifting vertebrae, a bulging or herniated disc, or a bone spur. Sciatica can affect anyone at any age, even young adults that are otherwise healthy. You may have sciatica if you notice any of the following:

  • Pain around the lower back that may radiate down one or both legs
  • Muscle weakness or reduced coordination in the lower body
  • Numbness or tingling sensations around the lower back, the buttocks, or the legs

How is sciatica pain treated?

Treatment for sciatica pain often begins with conservative techniques to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. Many patients respond well to physical therapy as well as gentle exercise and stretching routines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also provide pain relief, as can hot/cold therapy with a heating pad and ice pack. In more severe cases that do not respond to conservative methods, anti-inflammatory injections or surgery to take pressure off of the nerve may be recommended.

I was able to get a office visit on short notice. It seemed to be a very busy day. Rebecca took the time to listen to all of my issues and discuss a plan for additional treatment. I have always been impressed with her knowledge and bed side manner.
